Bailing out US auto

Quote from jprad:

Does anyone here honestly think that ANYTHING produced in Detriot can come close to competing with the likes of Benz, Porche, BMW, or the upscale rice burners of Lexus, Acura or Infiniti?

Well, yes. The 2009 CTS-V has 546 HP and is the fastest production sedan in the world (Nurburgring 7:59) for 59k.

I'm going to pick one up and enjoy the subsidy from your tax money.

Yeah, bail 'em out! Its the right thing to do! :D

I am still slightly lost here as jobs relate directly to sales not to production.

If gov advances money to GM (loan, bailout ... give it any name) and in '09 the market drops to 10M units and GM maintains it's market share, then it needs to drop half of it's staff.

If gov does not bailout GM then it's reduced market share goes elsewhere, and this is where gov needs to ensure that it is soaked up by US assembled units and not by imports.

These wild statements we all hear are like pouring gasoline on a small fire.

Pretty soon you have a big fire.

And so I would be working out the likely market size for '09 first.
Then deciding who gets a slice, and then deciding who needs help and who is not going to get any.

Yesterday's numbers are useless in tomorrow's markets.
