Backup connection: Mobile broadband card and security?

How safe is it to trade on a laptop with a PCMCIA mobile broadband access card say from Sprint? Looking for a good backup connection in case there's a DSL or power outage in my area.
 
Here's another solution. Go online and find a USB data cable that lets you connect your cell phone to your laptop or home pc. When my high speed internet goes down I can connect my Motorola phone and get online a about 3x the speed of a 56k modem. It's plenty fast enough to place orders.
