There is an extremely good case for any software used in electronic voting be open source. It would then be open to independent scrutiny by anybody with the necessary skills.

This does not compromise security - it enhances it because many eyes are more likely to find vulnerabilites.

There would be any number of ambitious security experts devoting themselves to some serious effort.
