Quote from TorontoTrader2:
[1] The problem is, history has shown us that Americns are pretty good at being deulded into believing that the BIGGEST threat to their "freedoms" comes from some 3rd world country no one can find on a map. And by people who wear towels or pyjamas.
[2] And that their lives and trillions of their dollars are required by the Military Industrial complex to counter this "threat".
[3] Meanwhile, they sit glued to their 42" TV set as their country goes down the tubes.. They have surrendered their will and their soul to a false image.
[4] Keep waving that flag, as the ship is sinking.
[5] Let's hear it: We are the best! USA #1!
[6] Let's face it, the USA is now a failed state run by rogue warlords... The USA has destabilized more countries than anyone else...
[7] USA citizens need to grow a spine and get out in the streets to overturn their communist regime. Only the Party Leaders elite like Cheney and HAL reap the rewards, the citizens suffer.
You elected oil thugs now deal with it. The greatest evil and threat to our freedoms comes from that regime.
Wait just a minute... you are correct on some points, misjudging on others, and missing the boat on still others.
Initially I wanted to debate each point, but decided I don't have the energy for all that. So, let me make a limited response on a few...
1. In general, there are 2 things that will get a politician/regime into power and/or keep them there... [1] A sense the people need to be "protected"... from "something" and the regime's promise to do just that (that was the REAL reason we went after Saddam... Bush didn't want to face reelection in a weak economy, so started a war so we could have a victory to feel good about come election time), and [2] A promise that the people will be "financially better off". This is not just present day America, but a thread throughout history. We American people can hardly be faulted for being normal in this regard.
2. America "likes" to be involved in wars, unfortunately. The PRIMARY reason is that it gives the Gummint "an acceptable excuse" to run budget deficits. Those deficts "support GDP and the economy", so the Gummint can claim "growth".. and give the illusion the people are generally "doing better financially in a growing economy". It has often been said, "The business of America is war".... and it's more for the economic boost than other reasons.
3. I don't know about "how many" countries the US has "destabilized", but let's not forget whose ASS we've pulled from the fire... and cut me some slack as I do this from memory...
a. England, France, and all of Europe in WWII.
b. China in WWII
c. Korea in 1951
d. Vietnam in '65-'75 (well, at least we tried)
e. Serbia and Bosnia
f. Saddam's invasion of Kuwait
g. Guess I shouldn't mention Pakistan, Iraq, & Osama just yet...
Countries who've gone to war against their neighbors have ALMOST ALWAYS done so to expand their empire... to conquer somebody, confiscate their assets and perhaps enslave their people in one form or another. With the exception of Mexico in our California land grab, the US has not been guilty of such aggression. We instead (AND OFTEN), have been called upon to STOP THE AGGRESSOR... then withdraw when peace is restored. (I've often wondered, "what did WE get out of our loss of lives, and financial expense? Usually people just seemed to hate us more. How's that for irony.... we "go to everybody's defense", "spend our money", "get our boys killed", GIVE TONS IN FOREIGN AID MONEY and get little in return. Where's the sense in that?)
Personally, I think America's reputation as a friend and ally has been much to be appreciated.
I also think you're right about the corrupt character of our Gummint.
And if I were POTUS, I'd correct many of the things you've mentioned. I'd also be more of an isolationist and leave the world to settle their own squabbles without our intervention. America doesn't "need" allies in the same way we did historically. ("Need" usually means we excessively spend money militarily to defend them and give them TONS in foreign aid.)
Oh yes, I'd correct many things. However the political establishment in the US LIKES THINGS THE WAY THEY ARE... for greed and power reasons. Therefore "we the people" will NEVER likely be able to THROW THE BUMS OUT... We the people and the rest of the world will just have to endure... until the US implodes financially (should take about 50 years) and a "new order" is established out of necessity.
Wish us citizens luck. We could use it.
