Automated Trading Championship 2011: Registration Is Open!!

I would NEVER give a working strategy code away. NEVER.

Honestly, I do not think that anyone who has a WORKING automated strategy will give that away.

That's just stupid.

As said before, why do you have to give the code? Why not a compiled file with a working strategy so you guys can't see the code?

I guess that says it all.

Well, actually we do accept the compiled EX5-files. Its not forbidden by Automated Trading Championship Rules (point 3.1) and many participants send us ex5-robots.

I have an auto system developed by a dare friend IMO one of the most intelligent people on this planet. I would call him the mozart of quantitative analysis and programming. What he has would blow any system out the water, but it appears you don't want a scalping system. Although the system caters of swing trading with over 80% winners and upto 95% if you take the high probability signals. The really money for the system is in scalping. Just wait till he completes his HFT system. I don't know the past records of the trading competition, but I very much doubt any system would even come close.

I doubt anyone with a great system would give their code. Just wont happen

Well, if he is not breaking the Rule III.7.4 (never use scalping: if the profits of 25% of trades, made by the end of the contest, are detected to range within the spread, the Participant will be disqualified), he is welcome. Maybe you are right and he will show us something that we never see before.

Sponsors about the Automated Trading Championship 2011

In anticipation of the start of the Automated Trading Championship 2011, we have interviewed our sponsors about different aspects of automated trading.

Anna Serbinenko, Chris Reynolds and Rupert Kain have shared their opinions about the Championship, the current state and prospects of automated trading and the services that their companies provide to the traders who use Expert Advisors in their trading. We hope that it will be interesting to all traders to see how much weight brokers give to the future development of automated trading systems.

Anna Serbinenko (MIG Bank):
Automated trading is a natural of development of todays’ markets. Needless to say that time is often valued higher than money, and automated trading is what traders dreamt about for decades. However, it’s important that traders keep in mind that no fast calculating machine will replace the analytical human mind. Many participating Expert Advisors are masterpieces not because of the programming skills, but because of the thought and analysis put into them. And as the market conditions change, they have to be revised on a regular basis.

Automated trading is definitely the way to go. Each year, we observe more and more traders using automated trading, often as an auxiliary function. And over time, I see it becoming a standard tool rather than exception. On the other hand, I do not see it replacing the human element completely. I would say a balance will be established between the two approaches, and the split will remain stable for some time. I also believe we are presently close to this consensus.
Chris Reynolds (GO Markets):
The Automated Trading Championship is a great opportunity for traders to test the performance of their Expert Advisors in a genuine trading environment with no risk and the chance to win thousands of dollars. I think that speaks for itself. It is a no risk chance to win more than some people make in a year in their day jobs – not just on trading! It also gives individuals a chance to showcase their talents and prove that they are the best EA coder in the business!

Whilst EAs can be a great tool for setting the trading to perform exactly as you would like it, there has also been the growth of a number of EAs claiming to be the holy grail and promising almost guaranteed massive profits. Luckily most traders are sensible enough to know that this is not likely to be reality and they take these claims with a pinch of salt, but there are some traders who need to do more research before using some EAs with their hard earned cash based on the claims of sales websites. This championship will also help to educate new traders on the kind of strategies that do and do not work, meaning they can choose the right EA.
Rupert Kain (Vantage FX):
Automated trading has provided retail traders with an opportunity to increase their productivity, and hence profitability in foreign exchange markets. Going forward, we believe retail investors are going to grow as traders and risk managers, and understand that there is no single strategy that will work in every market condition. As retail traders learn to embrace this perspective, and develop their system design and programming skills, we will see a paradigm shift in the way Automated Trading is currently being utilised by the majority.
Traders will begin to develop strategies that will take advantage of different market conditions. We believe we will see traders diversifying their trading over different strategies, timeframes, and currency pairs. This will require a more refined understanding of risk management, and will result in a much higher frequency of trading.

Three and a half months have passed since the beginning of the registration for the Automated Trading Championship 2011. 2130 people applied to participate, but only 1037 of the applicants were accepted after their personal data had been checked by the moderator. More than 1000 applicants were not accepted because they had not submitted all necessary data.

"We have tens of participants who filled their data. But we can't accept them because their address is filled insufficiently or an identification document issue (or termination) date is absent, – the Jury Panel member Stanislav Starikov says. – Of course, we will try to clarify this issues with each applicant separately but only after the registration procedure is finished".
The last day of the registration is September 23, 2011. We strongly recommend not to wait till the last moment. Send your Expert Advisor, if you want to participate in the Championship.

Before the start of each Championship, we receive hundreds of Expert Advisors that are subject to automatic preliminary testing. We decided to analyze testing reports of all applicants for participation in the Automated Trading Championship 2010. So we studied 425 reports of the Expert Advisors that were subject to automatic testing last year.

What we analyzed
Each Expert Advisor testing report contains a large number of statistical values, like the number of trades or the maximum consecutive losses. However, we were interested not in the testing results shown during automatic checks, but in the preferences of participants in terms of the following parameters:
  • the symbol on which the Expert Advisor was tested
  • chart timeframe
  • the number of input parameters of an Expert Advisor.
Our interest is connected, first of all, with the every developer of trading systems faces such questions. Each currency pair has its own character and advantages, a chart timeframe largely determines the trading activity of the Expert Advisor, while the number of input parameters an both help to optimize a system and lead a developer into the quagmire of fitting.

Distribution of Expert Advisors Based on Currency Pairs
Traditionally, in the first statistical report of Automated Trading Championships we publish data about the number of Expert Advisors trading this or that symbol. Based on this data we didn't doubt that EURUSD would carry the palm - being the most popular currency pair from year to year, it was used in 296 Expert Advisors.

On September 23, 2011 at 23:59 (Moscow time) registration for participation in the Automated Trading Championship 2011 was finished.

Since that time Expert Advisors are not accepted anymore, the EA automated verification system is stopped and it is already impossible to apply for participation in the Championship. During the remaining days until the start of the contest the Expert Advisors and personal details will be checked manually. The multiple registrations facts will be revised as well.

For almost four months we have been accepting applications for participation in the contest. 2442 applicants in total have been registered during this time. This is 716 people more than last year.

Though it was quite expectable, it must be noted that a real burst of activity was detected during the Registration last days. From September 12 to 23 the number of the Expert Advisors submitted to the Championship more than doubled increasing from 221 to 510.

As a result, personal data of 1217 applicants (out of 2442 ones) was approved. 510 applicants attached their Expert Advisors. 397 of them have passed automatic verifications at the moment. Therefore, only 16% from the initial number of potential participants will most probably test their Expert Advisors in the competition.

The article "Preferences of the ATC 2010 Participants" reveals the statistical data that had been obtained after the testing reports of all the Expert Advisors submitted for the Automated Trading Championship 2010 were analyzed. The following basic parameters were considered: the symbol and the timeframe on which an Expert Advisor was tested and also the number of input parameters.

This time we analyzed basic report parameters of 506 Expert Advisors that had been subject to automatic tests for Automated Trading Championship 2011 and compared them with the same parameters of the Expert Advisors that had been submitted for the last year's Championship.

Distribution of Expert Advisors Based on Currency Pairs
In comparison with the previous Championship there are no any significant changes concerning currency pairs. EURUSD is still the most popular pair. More than 80% of participants have chosen it this year. It is almost 12% more than last year. At that, the number of the Expert Advisors working with GBPUSD decreased by 7%.
