Automated Trading Championship 2011 Has Started!

Automated Trading Championship 2011: Interview with Kiril Kartunov (Liliput)
This is the third interview in the "ATC Champions League" project. The final balance of the winner of the Automated Trading Championship 2008 Kiril Kartunov (Liliput) was a record in the history of the competition - after the contest trading was stopped, it was equal to $169,585. The 2008 main prize satisfied the ambition of this trader, and he decided to quit Forex. This year he is back to try his luck once again with an absolutely new strategy.
What experience does participation in the Championship give? What were the bonuses from your first place in the ATC 2008 for you?

Participation in the Championship gives the programmer the advantage to compete with other programmers of MQL tools. It is a measure of the current status and also an important test period for the long coding work. My first place in 2008 gave bonuses and negatives at the same time. To be first makes you popular in the MQL community. But it is also hard to defend this place. Trading is a dynamic process and changes fast in time. After that I decided to quit Forex as the success was enough for me. But now I wanted to try the new MQL5 so I'm back. Unfortunately with less success.

Quote from sheepsucker:

Why would not someone who writes this good strategies trade them themselves instead of entering competitions?
It seems you haven't read any interview.

I found it rather unnerving that no US trader was in the top 10 for this competition.

Of the top 10

5 Russian
2 Chinese
2 Germany

I read some of the interviews. These guys are very well grounded and focused.

Analytical Research by Better: Money Management in the ATC 2011

Every Automated Trading Championship allows to collect a huge amount of unique information, which can be used for conducting various researches and making interesting conclusions. This information is available to all visitors of the ATC website. One of the Participants of the current competition, the winner of the Automated Trading Championship 2007 Olexandr Topchylo (Better) took the advantage of this information to analyze the dependence of profitability of participating Expert Advisors on the money management used in them.

Maximum Deposit Loading

Different Expert Advisors use different trading ways. Some use only a tenth of the balance to open positions, others use the whole available amount. The less available funds are involved in open positions, the lower is the risk for a trading account. Although, it also means less potential profit.

The Expert Advisors that use a smaller part of the account balance for trading risk less. The onces that open positions with large lots risk more. Of course, in the Championship there are more Expert Advisors of the second type, because without high risks it is hard to win, if the criterion is the maximum balance at the end of the competition.

Therefore, we introduce a value of the level of deposit used. Level of deposit used is the maximum ratio of funds involved in open Positions and the account equity.

Automated Trading Championship 2011: Sixth Week Report

The first half of the Championship has passed. Six weeks out of twelve ones are over but the intrigue still remains. The Expert Advisor of Igor Korepin (Xupypr) has eventually left our TOP-10 and never again will its chart cross the Championship leader - the Expert Advisor of mysterious ias. But Xupypr is still the leader by the number of Code Base downloads. His Expert Advisor has been downloaded over 1600 times. And we have great news - multi-currency trading robots are more profitable than single-currency ones!

It seems that multi-currency Expert Advisors will cause a real furor during the Championship. Everyone knows now that it would have been much better to make an Expert Advisor that is able to trade several currencies but only few know how. The chart of notused's Expert Advisor is not so beautiful as the one of ias but it is still advancing. Definitely, everyone understands that notused has good chances to find himself in TOP-3. The Championship comments section already has proposals concerning buying and selling most notable Expert Advisors but it is better to wait for the Market opening!

The money and time involved aren't worth it for anyone in the US, unless they are in college and bored. We're better off just trading our own accounts with real money doing the exact same thing.

Where is the parrot ranking is the real question, although not so "well grounded" perhaps as those mentioned above

A parrot from Papua New Guinea beat human traders

12:26pm UK, Friday August 07, 2009
A five-year-old female parrot called Strawberry has proved to be smarter than human investors in a stock investment contest.

The parrot from Papua New Guinea finished third in the six-week challenge, said Paxnet, an online stock market information provider.
Ddalgi (Korean for Strawberry) competed with 10 stock investors in South Korea.
Each started with 60 million won (£29,000) in cyber money and traded 10 million won (£4,860) worth of stocks in each transaction.
Our experiment proved that making long-term investments in blue chips is safe and effective.
Paxnet general manager Chung Yeon-Dae
Human investors picked any stocks they wanted but the parrot, using its beak, made random choices from balls representing 30 blue chips, including Samsung Electronics.

"The outcome of our contest was amazing. Ddalgi stood third with her investment return standing at 13.7%," Paxnet general manager Chung Yeon-Dae said.
Human investors averaged a 4.6% loss, with only two outperforming the parrot - one by 64.4% and one by 21.4%.
The human investors mostly chose to trade shares of small and medium-sized firms.
They each made an average of 190 trades over the six weeks.
Organisers gave the parrot seven chances to pick shares over the same period.
"Our experiment proved that making long-term investments in blue chips is safe and effective," Chung said.

Automated Trading Championship 2011: Interview with Ge Senlin (yyy999)

The Expert Advisor by Ge Senlin (yyy999) from China got featured in the top ten of the Automated Trading Championship 2011 in late October and hasn't left it since then. After the poor results in the previous year ATC, Senlin has prepared a new multicurrency Expert Advisor that never closes loss positions and uses position increase instead. Let's see whether this EA will be able to rise even higher with such a risky strategy.

yyy999__1.jpg

Last year you also participated in the Automated Trading Championship, but you were not so successful. This year your EA has good results. Have you made any useful conclusions from the previous Championship, which helped you to create a new EA?

True, last year my EA was not successful. It was programmed to trade 5 currency pairs. But due to some programming problem, or because I didn't take into account the running environment of the MT Server during actual Championship, as a result it only traded one currency pair during the competition. This is one of the reasons for my poor participation. Also the trading system was based purely on indicators - perhaps this is another reason.

Therefore, I didn't try to use that EA for this year Championship. I have chosen a different strategy and developed a new EA for participating in the ATC 2011.
