All the EAs are running on our hardware due to guarantee that all the participants has equal chances to win. Just imagine - you are running EA for a part time. Lets say 2 month, instead of 3. So, if say simply, you will have 66% possibilities comparing to the participant, running his Expert for a full time. And if we are running participants EA on our hardware we can guarantee, that all the participants had equal chances and worked for three months.
Also, if you are running the Expert from your PC we cant identify who conducts the trading operation - EA or a trader. In this case it could be a trading championship, but not AUTOMATED TRADING championship.
DLLs extends the abilities of Experts as whole, and allow to make some "remote control", particularly. So its forbidden because of we want to show how Experts are working without any possibility of human control. Anyway, last championship showed that profitable EA can be developed without any DLLs.
Decompiling EA - Its an old question. If say briefly: we do not need it. Our work is to develop trading platforms and to promote our MQL4 only. Thats why the access to the participants Experts is very strict - in fact only two man in our company have access to EAs. We could decrease these two men even, but they are really needed.
Also, you could see the last-year championship and some developers said the same words about decompilation. But the championship has past, all the participants experts were deleted on 23rd of December 2006 and nobody said that we have decompiled even one EA. I`ll say it again: just its not our job.
On the website of the Automated Trading Championship 2007, an Interview with Tomas Bopp has been published. Thomas is the Jury Member representing the TRADERS' magazine. In his interview, he tells where and how he studied technical analysis, as well as about his work at Der Zyklus-Analyst. Thomas has also revealed some details of his own Expert Advisor and his estimation of the Automated Trading Championship 2006.

Usually the "winner" of such contests is simply the person who remained at the top due to probability. 80 people enter, and a few of them make fewer mistakes than the others, happens to be short or long when the news hits the market with good/bad news, and/or overleverages just at the right time to get the big numbers.
I consider the winner of such contests as no more skilled than the saber-toothed squirrel in the movie "Ice Age" who spends most of his time in the movies dodging death whilst trying to get back his acorn...

You right, partly. The winners are those, who made less mistakes than their competitors. But these men are really skilled in EA development. At least 20% of participants finished the competition "in plus". Its hard enough.
On the website of the Automated Trading Championship 2007, an Interview with Ahmed Soliman has been published. Ahmed Soliman known as CodersGuru was not in the Top Three of the previous Championship. He tells in his interview what lessons he learned at the previous competition and what, in his opinion, determines success of any Expert Advisor. According to him, effective money management can compensate many errors in an Expert Advisor. At this Championship, Ahmed will submit an unconventional Expert Advisor based on principles other than technical analysis...

huh?
"in plus" - does this mean "even slightly profitable"? That is easy, not hard. Do 2-3x leverage of the market for a year, buy and hold. Usually, you will do well.
What is "EA" ?? Either you are profitable or not. I don't see the "skilled" part

Oops, looks like we are speaking about different things.
EA is an EXPERT ADVISOR - an automated trading application. There is no any human control. So try to write an Expert and try to be profitable at least for three month.

(Because strategies are not developed for real trading, I assume it is not a problem for winners to reveal their successful ideas - as usual at other semi-scientific conferences, e.g. KDD CUP)

Unfortunately, no. The developers' strategy and a code of his Expert - is a business of developer only. We do not want to force them to take part in some conferences and other events.
But if you got any question to any of participant, you can contact him/her directly from Automated Trading Championship web-site. Im sure, most of them will gladly share their thoughts and ideas. And i want to make a note, that ATC is a knowledge base itself. Even better than a conference.
Please, take a look at the news of ATC 2006 (http://championship.mql4.com/2006/news) - participants told about their expert advisors in details. And at the same time you can see the behavior of their experts. If something is still unrevealed, you can contact EA developer yourself. Yes, its not a conference, but you still can get the information you need "from the first hands".
Also, we are thinking of start publishing the articles based on trading strategies research. It will be materials based on theories and supported by the facts, by the parameters and results of participant experts. We think that these materials will be extremely interesting to the traders involved.
