I hold a high standard when it comes to US Military action - there should be Declaration of War by our Congress prior to military action. If the US is directly attacked then the US President can take immediate action while briefing Congress on the actions. A blockade is an act of war. If we attempt to blockade gasoline imports into Iran, that would clearly be an act of war. Under our Constitution, it requires a formal Declaration of War. Our practice has been to rationalize that some sort of wimpy authporization to use force, etc satisfies the constitutional requirement, but I would argue it doesn't. It's one thing for a congressman to say I voted funds for the military. It's quite another to say I voted for a Declaration of War against a country that hasn't attacked us.

Iran's ability to close the Straits of Hormuz has been under question for a long time. They have ground-based missiles that can take out any ship, including our carriers. Obviously, we have an overwhelming air and naval superiority. In one war game, a rogue US Navy officer running the "Iranian" forces, was able to swamp the Navy's defenses with massed attacks by sea-skimming missiles. Because the tactics he used were considered outside the rules of the game, the results were invalidated. It might not be so easy to do that in real life however.

Iran would likely launch an all out proxy war on Israel by hezhbollah and other groups while we were busy in the Straits. Our ships in the Persian Gulf are vulnerable to a variety of modern munitions, including advanced mines, quiet diesel-electric subs and the afore-mentioned missiles. A big worry has to be what advanced items the Chinese have provided them. Don't kid yoursleves. The Chinese would love to see us lose a couple of carriers in a conflict they are not part of.

Iran is causing a lot of trouble but they also have more trouble these days.

1)Just as with their neighboring countries, they may or may not be able to contain internal unrest. Getting tough on protesters works where it does and makes it worse where it doesnt. It's roll of the dice these days.

2) Israel has asked the White House many times either for permission or "to look the other way while it took out the nuke sites in Iran. The US has always said no but they could change/might have already changed.

3) The US was in control of Iraqi airspace until a couple weeks ago. This would be the very same airspace that Israel needed to fly over to hit the nuke sites. They dont have to worry about colliding with American defenses now or American promises to the Iraqis to make sure that did not happen. As we know, Iraq is a puppet of Iran and Iran expected Iraq to make sure that the Americans protected the airspace in a way that kept Israel from reaching Iran. Iran will need to figure out another theory now as to why Israel would not fly over Iraq.

4) Now that the Americans have pulled out, Iran expects to ramp up its plans to colonize Iraq via its puppet Muktar El Sadar the Gerbil. Problem is, Saudi Arabia and Al Queda are Sunnis and they are not going to let that happen, easily anyway. Iran sponsors worldwide terrorism and is about to see plenty of it arrive at its own doorstep. Notice that Saudi Arabia stepped up and said that it would offset any oil reduction in oil output that was caused by the Iranian drama this week.

As I said, Iran is causing a lot of new trouble but they have a lot of new trouble to deal with themselves. The same United States that has withdrawn is also the same United States that restrained Israel and Saudi Arabia from taking care of business on its own- either directly or backchannel.

Had Israel knew they could do it on their own, they would've done it with or without the American permission (Iraq nuclear plant, Syria's clothing warehouse, Sudan's desert and so on and so forth).
