Quote from onewaypockets:
The final proof that his program works was his own autopsy which showed his arteries were akin to those of a young man and totally clear of any signs of heart disease.
Quote from Toonces:
Since Atkins' death, I have wondered why he didn't do something similar. I mean, if you were a diet guru, and had millions of followers, wouldn't you insist that upon your death, coroners should do an autopsy, checking out your arteries, etc? Read the first paragraph in the following article.

She says her husband's medical record is of no concern or relevance to the media or general public. I really don't understand this attitude, unless you're trying to hide something. MILLIONS of people follow this guy. There are no long term studies detailing the effects of this diet. Now, one person isn't exactly a scientific study. But if you're a diet guru, silence the critics! Prove that you arteries are clean, your bones aren't deteriorating, and your kidneys are working fine at the time of your death. That's the least he can do, for the benefit of the public that made him and his widow multimillionaires.

Perhaps Atkins knew exactly what he should do but just couldn't continue following his diet. Or the obesity was really caused by his sickness/complications.

Nothing like an informed opinion.
I thank Atkins everyday for coming out in the 70s and promoting his diet. Quote from onewaypockets:
I would never joke about his weight gain if it really was illness/hospital related. Medications can do some strange things with weight/water gain, etc.
But the following his diet comment....if Atkins cheated a bit on his diet and had some carbs....a slice of bread or a Beer, that would not explain his atherosclerotic plaques that have been shown to be related to the excess consumption of saturated animal fat over long periods of time, something his diet PROMOTED as healthy. The smoking gun....(if I ever saw one).
The most amazing thing about Atkins was his ability to live to 72 eating all that fatty crap in his books. No wonder he got dizzy and smacked his head on the sidewalk![]()

I started doing Atkins style low-carb dieting five years ago. Last two years, I'm on CKD which is low-carb during the week and high carb during the weekends. I'm eating about 3/4 lbs of low fat cheese, egg whites, olive oil, spinach, wine and flax+sesame+sunflower seeds during the week. Then during the weekends, I eat my meat/chicken, bread, pasta, lots of fruit and veggies and about two bottles of dry and 1/2 bottle of dessert wine .
Since I started low carbing, I lost 60 pounds (from 225 to 165). My total cholesterol has been going down every year. Two months ago it was 92 (HDL=36, LDL=38). I also get tested for liver/kidney functions, Na/K and blood counts. Everything is normal. The nurse told me that my cholesterol is too lowI thank Atkins everyday for coming out in the 70s and promoting his diet.
