Yes... in my opinion when you are representing your nation -- disrespecting the flag should not be tolerated. If your country sucks so bad that you don't want to compete under the flag then don't attend the national Olympic trials.

Reality check,most people compete at The Olympics as a job to make money,not to represent their country.
I think not. Only a small portion of Olympic athletes compete in professional sports or have commercial endorsements. For most of these athletes in sports that have little T.V. coverage outside of the Olympics... the only time you will ever hear of them is during the Olympics coverage.
Only a small portion of college athletes compete in professional sports or have commercial endorsements,but they do it anyway because of the chance to make millions if they make it.Just competing can give many the ability to make a living by teaching,check out the prices for gymnastics schools and personal training for Olympic sports.

yeah but google all the sports in the summer olympics...... rowing... equestrian...shot put...archery... etc.. lot of amatuer sports that you cannot make a living off of.... Even trakc and field starts only make money winning the sprints and getting endorsements.
the only people who walk away with money lined up after gold medals are boxers, swimmers and gymnasts.
Well the Olympics is not going very well from a COVID perspective. Athletes from all over the world are showing up and testing positive for COVID. Many countries on the face of the earth don't even have vaccine doses yet. Makes you wonder why the IOC pushed forward despite resistance in Japan to hosting the games reaching a recent peak.

They really should have banned unvaccinated athletes from traveling to the country and have the IOC pay for and deliver vaccinations for contending athletes a month prior the Olympics.

TOKYO: Olympic teams should be immediately isolated if they arrive in Japan with a person infected with coronavirus, a Games official said Sunday (Jun 27), after members of Uganda's squad tested positive.
Hidemasa Nakamura, a senior Tokyo 2020 Games official, said that it is "highly probable that people will come into close contact with an infected person if they travel on the same plane."
"We'll immediately prepare a system to isolate and test them even before making a determination (whether they had close contact with an infected person)," he said in a programme discussing coronavirus measures by public broadcaster NHK.
His comments come after two of the nine-member Ugandan Olympic delegation tested positive for the virus following their arrival this month.
Even after one person was confirmed infected during screening at Tokyo's Narita airport on Jun 19, the rest of the team travelled on a chartered bus to Izumisano in Osaka prefecture.
Local health authorities later determined that the entire team - as well as eight other people, including host-city officials and bus drivers - had been in close contact with the two infected individuals, Kyodo News reported.
Public opinion has been firmly opposed to holding the Games this year over pandemic fears, though recent polls suggest opposition may be softening.
No overseas fans will be allowed and domestic spectators will be capped at 10,000 per event.
Japan has seen a comparatively small virus outbreak, with around 14,600 deaths, despite avoiding harsh lockdowns.
An initially slow vaccine drive has picked up, with nearly nine per cent of the population inoculated.
