Asset Managers in the US

Hi !
I was doing some little research on the global asset management industry.
I' ve been able to find the number of asset management company in europe splitted by country, or even in brasil ... but when it comes to the US ... impossible to find a single figure.
I even mailed the SEC but got no answers
Any idea of the number of investment management companies in the US ?

In the USA there are 50 states. In each state there are exactly 100,000 asset managers. Your answer is 5 million. Many of which don't manage much money.
