Arthur Jones on how much exercise is "enough"

One thing I've definitely learned is that "cardio" doesn't have to be on some dedicated machine sitting in a gym somewhere. The main cardio that I do is playing basketball with my son a couple times per week, or possibly also doing some yard work depending on the time of year. I exert myself just as much doing those activities as I would on an elliptical machine, and the basketball or yard work is a lot more fun for me.

So a great week for me would be five whole-body workouts, each lasting 30 minutes, plus one or two 30-minute sessions of basketball with my son. Sometimes it just doesn't work out like that though. Some weeks, like those when my son is enrolled in flag football, I can only squeeze in 3 workouts because I have to run him all the way on the other side of town for practice right during the time frame I would normally be working out. So I've definitely become more flexible over the years in terms of what I can realistically accomplish, fully understanding that family obligations might require me to do certain things at times that aren't so convenient for me. But hey, I'm in better shape than most guys my age, and to me the fam is worth getting sidetracked for anyway.

Barron…you look great with cool vibe…& nice family pic too..Congrats!

A few questions:

  1. My charts tell me your 37-43???

  2. Are you a “supplements taker”…& if so which ones???

  3. How many grams of protein & carbs do you average per day?
Thanks...

1. I am 45

2. I take quite a few supplements, but most of them are pure health related, such as a MultiVitamin pack, Fish Oil, 5000iu of vitamin D, Royal Jelly, and a fiber supplement.

I started noticing some vision issues a few months ago so I started taking a lycopene supplement for eye health, and I take palm fruit extract to prevent age-related hair loss.

In years past, I've posted on this site that my favorite supplement for fat loss and holding onto to whatever muscle I've earned along the way is called Ursolic Acid. That is no longer the case though. I found something even better, which is called Tomatadine, which sells under the brand name Titan. The cool thing about Tomatadine is that it's all natural, and it's not a stimulant. I am about 3 weeks into trying it and I already love it.

I consume a post workout shake on workout days, which is comprised of 50 grams of whey protein, plus 30 grams of an instantly absorbable carb called Amylopectin. On non-workout days, I still have a 50 gram protein drink but with no carbs added to it.

3. Depends if I'm trying to build muscle or lose fat. Currently, I'm in fat loss mode, so I'm keeping my carbs lower than usual, about 100 grams per day. On the protein side, I try to get in about 225 grams per day. I've learned that I don't do very well on a strict no-carb diet because my brain gets foggy and I can't function like that on a daily basis. So I just include a very small amount of carbs with each meal to keep my brain happy and also to prevent getting super flat, which is where your muscles have burned through the available glycogen stores and literally have deflated themselves due to not having enough carbs.

Impressive.
I happened to see (ABC News anchor) David Muir doing a bit on Space Pens yesterday... man, that dude has some guns on him too. Who'd have thought. Journalist are usually skinny types. That takes a lot of work.

Have you changed up your training in the last year> :strong:

What do you weigh currently and height?

I am 5' 10" and I weigh 181lbs.

The biggest change to my training this year has been less frequency but with higher intensity when I do train. So instead of 4 - 5 times per week, I may only do once or twice a week, but it's a barn burner of a workout.

And the other big change has been focusing not so much on building more muscle, but on fat loss through dieting.

What was your level of intensity when you were working out 4-5 times a week?
