If the Congressmen had been armed there wouldn't have been a problem. I'll leave it at that.

The security detail and Capitol Police were the reasons the Congressman was not killed. They returned fire as soon as the threat was realized.
The assailant opened fire in an ambush style attack. That means he got off the first rounds. Doesn't matter how much protection you have at that point. The attacker almost always gets the opening salvo.
DC Gun laws, the toughest in the nation, did not stop this jackass from bringing a rifle in. Why? Same reason all gun laws fail. People who are determined to commit murder don't care about a law. It only stops law abiding citizens who aren't causing crime in the first place. Yet another example of how gun laws don't work.
I'll leave it at that.
Which is why the Congressmen and their staff members should all carry guns.
This disaster is directly attributable to D.C.'s ridiculously strict guns laws which don't let decent citizens much less elected representatives defend themselves.

States and Cities with limited gun restrictions have much lower crime rates than states and cities with strict gun control laws even when accounting for population size, poverty levels, and other factors. There is a reason New York City, D.C., Chicago, etc. are crime disaster areas. -- decent citizens are not allowed to defend themselves.
I'm not certain but I think certain jobs like congressmen, judges,prosecutors etc allow you to get a carry permit in DC.
If the congressmen were armed it likely wouldn't have made much of a difference.The gunman still would have gotten off multiple shots before they had a chance to react and they were playing baseball so they likely wouldn't have had their guns on their side.
For the record I am not anti 2nd amendment.I responded to your post because you showed the shooter had multiple arrest for violent offenses.A person with multiple arrest for violent offenses should not be allowed to own a firearm but the GOP and NRA will fight like hell to allow them to do it.In many parts of the country anyone can buy a gun in the parking lot of a walmart from a craigslist seller and the GOP wont even vote to stop that.

This shooting is just another example of the fact, "THE LEFT TOTALLY INTENDS UPON WINNING"! Whatever it takes. Nothing is beyond the pale for them.
The Left will not back off; their believers/followers are brainwashed. They will do everything politically possibly (like they're trying to do right now)... they'll also lie, cheat, steal, and murder. When that doesn't work, they take to mass murder, shooting up innocents at the baseball field. I hope it doesn't end in an armed conflict civil war, but I wouldn't be surprised.
