I would like to find someone to prove me wrong. Not even the (few) americans I talked to did. Keep the quarterback out of the discussion. He is the only one who uses the brain. Probably he is the only one who has some.

to a Spice Girl and the ascension of Manchester United
statistically Beckham has none whereas Gretzky has not only shattered all NHL/hockey
records he created new ones which still stand today

soccer would lose really, really bad? Sure would Pele!
So what do soccer players really do? They kick the ball all around
and try to get it into a large net at the end of the field. They throw
a little onto the field (big deal) and hit the ball with their frickin' heads. Wow!
Now what do Real football players do?
They (quarterback, sometimes a running back or receiver,ect) throw
the ball with precision downfield for either a short distance,
a long distance, or sideways or hand off or lateral the ball or run
it themselves,ect...)
In soccer the equivilent would be "Should I kick the ball or try to
go around the nut in front of me".
In real football, you have quys who use their hands to also catch the ball.
In soccer it is a crime to touch the ball with your hands! Oh no!
How complex are the penalties in soccer? Someone trips someone.
Now that is complex! Or they headbutt the guy in front of them
in their last match so they can look macho! Whoopee!
How acrobatic does a soccer player get? Well... they can jump up
and kick the ball while their legs are over their head. Wow! How
often does that happen in a match and they score? You tell me...
How acrobatic does a football player get? Well... a receiver can jump
up and catch the ball in midflight and touch back down in a very small
designated area for a score.
Football wins here!
How many brains does it take to run around and kick a ball? Hardly any.
How many brains does it take to learn and remember countless
offensive and defensive alignments and carry them out perfectly?
This comparison is a no-brainer!

Soccer is like basketball except you are using your feet instead of
your hands to put a ball into a net. How simple.
And how many points do soccer players score? Hardly any. Boring!
How many soccer coaches does it take to teach someone to kick a ball?
How many football coaches does it take for a real "football" team?
And what do soccer fans do when they win or lose a big match?
They riot and kill themselves.
And how dangerous is soccer? They wear funny looking shorts!...
Football IS dangerous. That's why they wear pads and helmets.
Soccer is a simple game compared to football...
That is why soccer will never be big in America. It's too simple...
P.S. Answer to the OP question: No, hardly anyone is excited that
Beckham has come to the USA. He's a one trick pony who happens
to be the most over-rated player on the planet. And he's getting old!
He's definitely not the next Pele, that's for sure!...
American Football would be so much better if they didn't have all that protection...
I'm thinking most American football players wouldn't last ten minutes in a Rugby, Australian Rules or Gaelic football match, where its just as violent if not more so, and they usually have nothing but mouth guards.

Its like going to see a boxing match with the fighters all wrapped up like Michelin Men... What's the point of that?
I'm not doubting that its a skillful game, it certainly is... but its not a full contact sport, the others are...
You don't have a clue about the game of football and how complex it is, not just for the qb. Setting screens, reading blitzes, knowing when and where to expect the ball, etc etc. Watch those post game shows on espn where they breakdown offensive as well as defensive plays and you'll begin to realize just how coordinated everyone has to be to make it work.
hell just take a look at the playbook...to understand how complex it is for the coach to stay in front of the 8 ball. in order for the play to work the entire offense must be in sync, because passes get there before the receiver is even there...so a receiver running the wrong route can blow the play up....peace..in rugby and i have no idea what the object is ..it looks more like kill the man with the ball strategy...
