Watch them fighting the Olympic torch with the kind of fervor only cult followers can have. And they revere the Dalai Lama more than they do Jesus.

No need to bring Jesus into this. These folks are mostly Tibetan Buddhists who are fighting for independence from China and basic human rights for their compatriots. Although I disagree with some of their tactics (the Olympic games are meant to be an instrument for peace and reconciliation among nations, not a tool for continued fighting and endless bickering) I respect their determination and willingness to suffer for what they believe and want to achieve. For the most part they've been non-violent, ie, no exploding bombs strapped to their bodies etc. My advice to those in charge is to temporarily restrain the demonstrators that get in the way and keep going with the %%$$##@@ torch already!

That's crazy. The Dalai Lama has been speaking on non-violence, tolerance and reconciliation all his life. He came to present his ideas at UVA while I was a graduate student, the man is great, the Ghandi of our generation. Now, you guys quote the "secret texts" of somebody and the well known "CIA lists" from someone else, and try to make a "reasonable" point? Why don't you look for Jimmy Hoffa and Elvis while you're at it? C'mon, folks, people are tortured and killed in Tibet every day, not to mention all of China! Don't we have a moral obligation to, at least, respect their suffering, if not try to influence the situation a little?

We can have an entire forum to debate the Dalai Lama's beliefs and motives. But I'll just leave it there - I don't expect that I'll be able to convince you.

The problem of Tibet is really a problem of communism. I'm surprised that rightwing anticommunist crusaders don't see it. Chinese of all ethnic groups are tortured and killed all over China. Why single out Tibet? The only thing you accomplish by singling out Tibet is to strengthen the communist hold elsewhere in China, whereby making the Tibetan independence more difficult.

Make China free, then Tibet will be free too. It's that simple.

Oh, and BTW, this is simply untrue. He was a slave owner before he fled China. How he treated slaves can be found in several reports written by westerners before communist took over in 1950. You can probably find them if you googled.
