are divergences really worth anything?

Quote from NihabaAshi:

As some have mentioned already in this thread...

divergence doesn't only occur between price and some indicator.

Divergence signals are used by traders making trade decisions via indicators and by traders making divergence trade decisions via price action only methods.

I use both and both requires just as much study, preparation and concentration.

Also...divergence signals don't always occur at a top or bottom...

it can occur in pullbacks as a Long signal after a top or as a bearish signal as a failed counter-thrust after a bottom.

Simply...divergence is bigger than many traders think something some of us have been discussing in private message.

Therefore, to answer your questions...

Do you really need a "divergence" of some kind to identify a double top or bottom?

Nope...many other trading tools to help traders to target a top or bottom.

Is the price action really not clear enough?

Not always...especially when there's divergence in whatever your trading while market breadth indices are flat or indecisive.

Last of all...what may be simple to one trader...may be complex to another or vice versa...

this is obvious via the numerous debates at ET about what's simple or easy to understand.

I truly wish trading was easy.

If it was easy...the Psychology thread here at ET may be empty

Fine. Let us be modern, and agree to disagree.

Here are two stocks that are trying to make a bottom right now. Lets see what you can do. Post your trade on esrx or apol.

in my experience divergences between price and momentum indicator (such as macd) MUST be confirmed by price action (such as break of trendline). If you take em without confirmation... you're screwed.

Let me try to resume what I got out of this thread:

Sometimes divergences are really worth something;

Other times divergences are really worth nothing.

nononsense

the slow stochastic has just diverged and the trend line is broken.
anyone care to take a shot. It don,t get any better than this does it.

Perhaps the people best suited to answer this question are the authors of books covering divergences. They should be able to determine the value of divergences based on a simple calculation: number of books sold multiplied by royalty per book.

Also, I would imagine that full service brokers who justify trade recommendations based on divergences could similarly calculate the value of divergences using a modified version of the above mentioned formula. Of course, let us not forget the seminar market, and so on and so forth.

(Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

I don't trade stocks.

I already post my realtime trades on Eminis along with many other ET members.

You should have been around when Lindq showed up...

we all had a good time including Lindq and learn a few things from each other...

I learned a few things about overnight holds from Lindq and hopes he returns to share more info.

Lindq enjoyed the room and we enjoyed Lindq being there...nobody was there to prove or disprove anything nor seeing something as a challenge all though it may have initially started that way via the message exchange here in this thread...

you can private message him to ask him about his experience with some traders that rely heavily upon divergence signals while hanging out with us eventhough not all in the room use divergence signals.

hoodooman, if you decide to show up...your only allowed to post either Emini Futures including YM or ETF's including DIA or Eurex trades...

stock trade posting not allowed.

There's a good room for stock trade posting on the Othernet called #pitstock although it can be a little distracting...

another on FinancialChat server called #ActiveTrader

Hopefully your not asking me to apply something to something I don't trade, haven't traded stocks in years ???

Once again...I don't trade stocks nor do I have a stock trading account although I have longterm stock investments via my spouse account (UPS, ONE, BANC, AMZN and F)

Last of all, I'm not posting in this thread to give stock trading advice on stocks your interested in.

If you can't make your own trade decisions...

don't look at me to help you with your stock trades.

I gave you a big hint where there are divergence traders posting there trades in realtime for stocks...

go ask them.
