Apple rejects court order to help FBI unlock San Bernardino gunman’s phone

Apple Inc. AAPL, +0.56% is rejecting an order from a federal judge to design a version of its iPhone software which bypasses the security measure that prompts a phone to self-destruct after 10 failed password attempts so federal investigators can unlock a phone linked to one of the San Bernardino, Calif., attackers who killed 14 people in December.

“The United States government has demanded that Apple take an unprecedented step which threatens the security of our customers,” Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook wrote in a letter to customers posted online. “We oppose this order, which has implications far beyond the legal case at hand.”

This case has the potential to go all the way. The government usually wins, unless there is enough outcry. Even then, the supreme Court ends up making the law, which IMO is really bad.

Think this is a job Apple should refer a contractor to go do and wash their hands of it.
