Anyone used Raspberry for trading?

Dear-

As shown in
a cheap+simple+cute machine is available.

I wonder if there is a (SW and HW) problem to trade with TWS in IB and others.

The Raspberry PI 2 has:

  • 1 HDMI port for monitor ( You will need HMDI > VGA adapter for older monitors).
  • 4 USB ports for keyboard, mouse and two other USB devices.
  • USB micro 5V connection for power.
  • You can trade using your brokers browsers trading platform.

I just received a Raspberry PI 2 through Ebay and have ordered lots of electronic part for it - such as a breadboard, resistors, sensors etc.

Please tell me, such as SOME trading platform successful in SOME OS.
Main interest is at Interactive Broker TWS, as most does in ET.
 
You're not planning on running IB TWS or IB Gateway on there right? Processors in this class do not have enough RAM or CPU horsepower to to run Java apps.

  • I don't know if the Raspberry PI 2 is powerful enough for a stand alone trading platform.
  • It should be OK for all browser based trading platforms - such as IB's browser based trading platform.
  • A laptop would be better suited for trading using a stand alone trading platform.

Probably, it is not a good idea to run JAVA based TWS in RPi you mean.
However, it might be OK to run browser like Explorer 11, for IB trading.

HTML 5 is standard protocol over the world these days, so that ALL broker provides web-based trading over the world.

The jacks on the Pi are most suitable for a standalone monitor (via HDMI) and standalone keyboard (via USB) and standalone mouse (via USB). You can't really leverage the monitor and keyboard that is integrated into a laptop.

I would not use the Pi as a trade execution platform or for anything that is "mission-critical" like financial transactions. If you are looking for a cheap platform to run TWS reliably, you are better off buying a used laptop that runs at least Win7.

I've done the same ... will enjoy testing the various sensors when I have time.
