Anyone use Open Office ?

I much prefer Open Office to MS-Office. I have had fewer compatibilty problems with O.O., and it seems to be more oriented to getting the job done. it runs faster on my computers and doesn't tie up my computer's resources with cute but annoying and useless features, e.g., dancing paperclips, etc.

wow that's amazing I really didn't think so many people were using this.

I guess my biggest concern was the compatibility issues of people sending me docs and excel sheets but it seems like this isnt really an issue to much and it will work well with standard stuff right?
it usually works decently, yes. But you can never be sure. Maybe you can try it for a while. You can always take M$ later.
Besides, maybe you can ask those people to install OpenOffice. Spread the word :)

I used OpenOffice in the past with no problems.

Currently using MS Office 2007, in no small part due to the 1M rows / 16K columns thing. Been waiting forever for this. Overnight Excel has gone from being of limited value for intraday work (with 64K rows) to being able to hold nearly 3 years of 1m 24/5 data, 14 years of 5m data, etc.

There's a bunch of comparison reviews online for the two office suites and their components, e.g., on Wikipedia.

Last time I checked OpenOffice Calc v.2 also had a limit of 64K rows... is that still the case in v.2.2?

wanted to ask you if you meant 3 years of excel data storage?? or you taking about a database with excel? I know excel an handle some historical data for storage but did not know the exact amount.

I was, many years ago, working with an MS-Excel spreadsheet which somehow became corrupted, so that Excel could not open it. I was very upset, because the file had an enormous quantity of data in it that I could not afford to lose.

I downloaded and installed Open Office. Open Office was able to recover all of my data from the corrupted Excel file, something that Excel could not accomplish.
