Anyone skip the middle-man?

Does anybody here trade directly through a firm such as Goldman or Merrill? I know the capital requirement is very high and the leverage is much lower than with a pro firm, but would like to hear from anyone who has taken this route.

I only trade through top tier name firms. I prefer the lower credit risk to higher leverage available elsewhere.

I don't myself, but i know people who do for futures. Through Fortis for instance. It's not as difficult as you sound it to be.
