yup esp wine. I think from memory that kiwitrader lives on the gold coast so he probably hates the annual influx of melbourne schoolies and their VB cans

Quote from kiwi_trader:
When I was a kid we used to go out onto the reef and collect 20mm canon shells. Then we'd pry the bullet heads off and pour the cordite into the big (300ml?) VB cans until they were about 1/3 full. At night we'd half bury them in the sand and then we'd stand back and throw matches at them. Great fireworks.

What the f?
Not Ice; speed. The answer is its great (throughout metropolitan Australia but probably best from Sydney because most of the cable hubs seem to depart from Sydney so everyone else pays 20-30ms rt to link to sydney).
Best trading futures markets for those who wish to work normal hours are:
SGXNK, JP NK, HSI, KOSPI, STW and SPI
Spoilt for choice and the European markets offer good evening opportunities. The US equities are fine as long as you want to be awake while everyone else is sleeping. The asian timeframes fit best and unless you have a strategy which requires sub 200ms round trip delays then Aus is a nice place to trade from (I'm on the Gold Coast).

In Sydney I know North Shore best. You should look at some of these -
- Lower North Shore: North Sydney, Milsons Pt, McMahons Pt, Lavender Bay, Kirrabilli, maybe Neutral Bay.
Also consider:
- Inner West: Balmain, Glebe and others.
- Eastern Suburbs: Paddington, Rose Bay and others
- Darling Harbour and the city itself also now has a lot of high rise apartments.
Not the same as Manhatten of course, but you don't have Sydney Harbour in Manhatten. I think there are quite few areas you could exist quite well without a car. There are some wonderfull places to visit around Sydney which are much easier to access by car but you could use a rental car for this.
I think there are more interesting places to live than Darling Harbour which is really not any different than so many redevelopment projects in cities around the world.
Quote from nzbryant:
Lived in Sydney for 5 years. Without a car is not really feasible. It can take 45 min to get to the beach from Paddington in the bus - and 10 min by car. Take a girl out in the bus or cab? No - its nothing at all like Manhattan - a car is essential. Used to live in Manhattan - better quality of life in Aus but I found the people somewhat cliquey, and a little stupid generally. If you want intellectual stimulation you need to really seek it out - NOT like Manhattan or London.

Thanks fo the input; I have been hearing this. I sense that it's a pleasant posting, not a hardship by any means and in many ways quite nice. But in terms of sophistication it is more West Virginia than Upper West Side. Friendly, unpretentious, but .... (And hey I was in JoBurg last year and you wanna talk about an undersirable place ....)
