Quote from mischief:
Because you're body goes into 'starvation' mode and shuts down your metabolism.
Remember, we've only been 'civilised' for 5,000 - 7,000 years and our bodies are much older than that.
If you starve yourself, the body responds as if you're still running around the savannah. Under those conditions, to survive the body should only use that stored energy as an absolute last resort. The body will slow your metabolic rate, even start metabolising protein (i.e. muscle) before giving up all your fat stores.
Dead on, my friend!
Again, your body is incredibly smart, it's always trying to stay one step ahead of you. Your body will, believe it or not, catabolize muscle before fat as well. It requires much more energy to main muscle tissue than it does fat tissue. If your body goes into starvation mode it needs to rid itself of the most costly liabilities and unfortunately that is muscle tissue.
We all try to make health out to be this whole complicated mess, it's really simple.
The biggest mistake most people make is yo yo dieting.
Yo yo dieting fads. You end up depriving yourself of calories and while you do lose weight during these diets, you actually lose muscle tissue. After such diets you go back to eating normally but this time you no longer have as much muscle tissue before, therefore your metabolic rate is slower and you put the weight back on and then some. It's an endless cycle. Also, depleting yourself of a particular macronutrient (protein, carbs, or protein) can do long term damage to your metabolic rate, more directly, to your thyroid production. Your thyroid gland basically regulates your body's metabolism. Medium to longer term deprivation of carbs can significantly hinder your body's output of TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) and put fat on you regardless of your eating habits.
No, let's say that you are already experiencing such disaster. We can fix this by ridding the body of toxins and acids. Most weight gain is actually do to the body trying to find extra space to store acid waste. Get a solid detoxifier and eat an alkaline diet and the weight will just melt off your body. Fruits and veggies don't have nearly the same amount of nutrients and vitamins that that once had back in the early 1900s so you'll need a multi-vitamin.
Also, men who are overweight should seriously consider an aromatase inhibitor. As we age and put on adipose tissue (fat) our body accumulates in our fat cells an enzyme that converts testosterone into estrogen. It's really a losing battle, as our body creates less and less testosterone THEN on top of that ugly aromatase comes in and kicks us while we're down. The best thing an older man can do is to do a kick ass PCT (post cycle therapy) recovery that most people do after discontinuing use of anabolic steroids. The best PCT is as follows
Weeks 1-2 500iu HCG/day
Weeks 1-4 20mg Aromasin/day, 20mg Nolvadex/day, .5mL Vitamin B injection/day
You will kick start your own natural production of testosterone and significantly suppress estrogen levels in your body. I have administered this to several overweight gentlemen over the age of 45 and the results were nothing short of miraculous. Not only did these gentlemen's libido return to teenage years but fat just melted off their bodies and they were finally able to gain strength and add muscle tissue in the gym. I recommend doing this at least once per year meanwhile staying on an anti estrogen or aromatase inhibitor year round.
Hope this helps..
