Anyone buying Vista?

And as more and more of my stuff is on servers (using Windows Server), I want to start playing around with Linux on local PCs, but I digress...
There's a digression I'd like to hear more about...

Once I got over my laziness & downloaded Firefox, I became a fan of opensource. Faster than IE and somehow those unsolvable, random mid-day lock-ups have disappeared. Have trouble seeing a connection but am happy w/ results either way.

A techie friend said we'll never get all the drivers we need to successful run Linux w/ all programs since everyone will be creating/updating for MS.....

I am not saying that this is the case, but it would be a huge temptation for CIA types to be able to read computers around the world for instance. Or shut down enemy ones.

Of course they did; When Microsoft lunched its products in China; they have to give up their source code. Where did you think all these Chinese pirate copies of Windows came from?

Be seriously; Microsoft make a good product for below average users.

Vista is pretty darn good if you have the computer to run it. Vista is paving the way for the next gen operating system that should basically step it up to the next level if you have listened to a recent Bill Gates interview. The major disappointment for me was not have the DB filesystem that would have made it run incredibly faster.

30 days with Vista

I thought it was a very stable operating system that keeps files very well. Vista has an advanced system retore which is better than XP's outdated system restore. The new system restore keeps people from losing their data and keeps their data safe, even if you accidently delete your important data, Vista has a feature where it can find it for you. Vista is better than XP.

microsoft emphasizes that their next OS will come out way sooner than vista came after xp (meaning, much less than 5 years). i personally believe it's best just to skip vista. say 3 years down the road ms will come out with a new one. by that time you'll want to upgrade your hardware anyway, etc. plus it seems that vista isn't going to be too successful. so MS will do their best to make up for it with the next OS they'll release. same was with windows ME (possibly the worst OS that MS ever released), which was followed by winXP (possibly the best one). just sit vista out guys. don't waste your time, energy and money.

by now it is obvious to all that vista provides literally zero technical benefit over xp anyway. we all got better stuff to do than to mess around with it.

What an intelligent post. You are absolutely correct.

Nobody has to upgrade to Vista if they don't want to. People can keep their XP system and Microsoft will support it with help questions and upgrade downloads. Microsoft already said that they will support XP for five more years. So if people are happy with XP, then stick with it. We were all forced to upgrade to XP because Microsoft said they are not supporting Windows 98 any longer. So we had no choice. But you can stay with XP if we choose so. Or you can upgrade to Vista. It's up to you. If XP works for you, then stick with it. But if you are buying a brand new computer, then it usually comes pre-installed with Vista. Just get a Vista with at least 2GB of memory or else you won't be happy with it. Vista actualy is a pretty neat operating system once you get use to it.

They were smart to stop putting the year in the name of their OS's. Hence the adage, "Never buy an OS in the same year as it's name!"
