anybody use "basket Trading"

Does anybody use a basket trading methodology intraday?

I've been speaking to some other traders whom I get together with around once a month for drinks here in NYC, who buy (or short) 200 shares of 6 - 10 stocks in the morning then get rid of the losers as the trend unfolds and add to the winners.

Does anybody else trade this way? If yes, do you find it a consistent money maker?

this may be a naive question, but what advantage does this give you over staying flat until the moment you would normally drop the losers and double up on winners, and entering at that time?
 
that I can't answer because I don't add and drop from the basket, that is probably just one persons trading strategy... might be easier just asking that person.
