You can't just pick up and go and decide to live in the U.S. Right?
If you have a multiple entry visitor's visa you can basically live in the U.S. (you have to go out every six months for a couple of weeks or something), but not allowed to take a job. Don't know if it changed since 9/11.

PDT rules do not apply the Canadian broker told me.
PDT is an American government (SEC) law to protect U.S. citizens. Foreign countries make their own laws and none of them have anything like PDT to my knowledge.

good question. 14 years, but more seriously since '97.
and their vehicle (trading) of choice.
US equities mostly, at least you have a chance and the liquidity is good.
