Let me answer to this question.Apart from the landscape a society and local customs are made by the people.I know many people from the south living in the north and many of them hate the lifestyle of their native place and going back for holidays they can't stand it more than few days..Obviously as always in every situation you have not an 100% but on average there's a difference between the two sides.Quote from Wittgenstein:

Often it's just pure hypocrisy. Yes, there is a strong church. How many people really follow it, that's another story.
