Antivirus advice urgently needed....

I loaded Avira, seems decent, but doesn't seem any more trading pc friendly then avg 8. Maybe I'm missing something but here's my point. Avira w/ the guard active uses about 50-60mb of memory.
Recently I installed Avira on one of the family PCs. I had 50-60mb usage for 2 days. The 3rd day (& thereafter), it used less than 10mb. My son also loaded it on his rig & it uses less than 10 mb...

I'm assuming that if I turn the guard off I won't have realtime detection. Also, every time the pc reboots the guard is active, is there a way to keep it off by default.

The program either started in reg HKLM/.../Startup, or in Adminstrative Tools/Services. You can either use Hijackthis to remove it or modify it to keep from starting automatically by changing the option in Services.

Interesting, I'll keep an eye on it

Am I correct in assuming that if the guard isn't running I don't have realtime av detection?

Yes.

I'm using Avira AntiVir now.

I was using Avast, but there was a problem whereby that spinning blue thing would not stay active in the tray at the bottom.

I tried reinstalling it, going to Avast Forums for a solution, and for whatever reason, couldn't get to stay active.

Avira is great but doesn't have email scanning.

Mine did drop to under 10mb as well, sometimes a lot less. Upon restart it does go back up to the 50mb+ range but then drops w/in 20mins. I guess there's a new sherif in town.
