Anti-Crime Activist Shot Dead Following Thanksgiving Dinner

Anti-crime activist Shuri Henry was killed around 11 pm Thursday after driving back to her own home following Thanksgiving Dinner.
Henry was 40 years old.
According to NJ.com, Henry’s “young nephew” was riding with her when they pulled up to her home in Newark. She and her nephew were then allegedly targeted by armed carjackers. Henry was shot and left for dead as the carjackers took her vehicle and fled the scene. Her nephew was not harmed.
Henry’s neighbor, Devon Wright, said he heard the sound of the of the gunshot and ran outside in time to see “two people in her car, driving away with the lights off.”
Wright said, “At the time I thought she was the driver. I couldn’t see her where I was standing. A few minutes later all these police cars came screaming up. I came outside again to see what they were kneeling in front of. I saw her, face down, lifeless.”
Two adults and a minor were arrested Friday after police found them in Henry’s car.
Henry had scheduled an anti-crime rally for Nov. 30. District leader Lyndon Brown said the rally will go on as planned, suggesting that Henry’s murder highlights the need for the event.
New Jersey has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation. It remains a “may issue” state for concealed carry, requiring applicants to show a “justifiable need” for a permit before being allowed to carry a gun for self-defense.
