The Russian foreign ministry launched a social media campaign Thursday to “free Maria Butina,” the alleged Russian spy charged with infiltrating GOP social circles to pass information back to Moscow ahead of the 2016 election.
“We are starting a flash mob in her support,” read a tweet from the agency’s official Twitter account asking users to change their social-media profile pictures to a photo of Butina and tweet using the hashtag #FreeMariaButina.
The ministry also changed its profile image to a photo of the red-headed 29-year-old Butina.
Butina, who sits behind bars without bail in a federal holding facility, was a “celebrity in Russia,” according to US prosecutors.
A year after she moved to Moscow in 2010, she founded the pro-gun-rights group, The Right to Bear Arms, and quickly gained notoriety as an up-and-coming political influencer.

FBI Director James Comey on Wednesday said top Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin was not criminally charged even though she sent classified emails to now-estranged husband Anthony Weiner.
Comey said Abedin forwarded thousands of emails from Clinton to the former congressman as a “matter of convenience” so he could print them out because her boss preferred reading information on paper.
“Somehow, her emails were being forwarded to Anthony Weiner, including classified information,” Comey told a Senate Judiciary Committee. “His then-spouse Huma Abedin appears to have had a regular practice of forwarding emails to him for him to print out for her so she could deliver them to the secretary of state.”
Comey confirmed the FBI investigated Abedin, but concluded she did nothing criminally wrong.

Her father, Syed Zaynul Abedin, was a professor in Saudi Arabia who founded the Institute for Muslim Minority Affairs, an institution established by the Government of Saudi Arabia with the support of the Muslim World League.
The Muslim World League was “perhaps the most significant Muslim Brotherhood organization in the world,” according to former federal prosecutor Andrew C. McCarthy. Its then-General Secretary, Umar Nasif, founded the Rabita Trust, “which is formally designated as a foreign terrorist organization under American law due to its support of al Qaeda,” he wrote.
That is not guilt by association but what federal prosecutors would call a “nexus” of like-minded people who shared the same goals.
A Saudi government document inspired by Ms. Abedin’s father explains the concept of “Muslim Minority Affairs,” the title of the Journal Mr. Abedin founded, and its goal to “establish a global Sharia in our modern times.”
Simply put, Huma Abedin worked for thirteen years as part of an enterprise whose explicit goal was to conquer the West in the name of Islam. No wonder the Clinton campaign wants to sweep this issue under the rug.
Mrs. Clinton has sometimes referred to Huma Abedin as her “second daughter.” Whether it was because of their close relationship or for some other reason, Mrs. Clinton has done much to further the Muslim Brotherhood agenda while Secretary of State, and can be counted on doing more as president.
As Secretary of State, she relentlessly pushed the overthrow of Libyan leader Mohammar Qaddafi, a dire enemy of the Brotherhood, even when President Obama and his Secretary of Defense were reluctant to go to war.
Along with Obama, she pushed for the overthrow of Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak and his replacement by Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohammad Morsi.
She pushed for direct U.S. involvement in the Syrian civil war, including the arming of Syrian rebels allied with al Qaeda.

The gun-rights activist has been accused of working for the Kremlin, including an attempt to arrange a meeting between Trump and Vladimir Putin.
Maria Butina, a Russian gun-rights activist accused of working as an agent for the Kremlin in the U.S., has reached a plea deal with federal prosecutors, according to several media reports Monday.
Butina, 30, was arrested in July and charged with illegally acting as an agent of the Russian Federation. U.S. authorities charged that she had used her close ties to the National Rifle Association and conservative operatives to wage a covert influence campaign and even tried to broker a secret meeting between Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin during the 2016 presidential campaign.
As part of her agreement, Butina will plead guilty to conspiring “with a Russian government official … and at least one other person, for Butina to act in the United States under the direction of Russian Official without prior notification to the Attorney General,” according to a copy of the plea document obtained by ABC News. The deal also mandates Butina cooperate with federal, state and local investigators and could see her serve a short prison sentence or be released for time served, upon which she would likely be deported to Russia, according to the Times. It must still be approved by a federal judge.
During her work, Butina also posed as a graduate student at American University in Washington, D.C., to gain a visa, prosecutors allege. She regularly posted photos on social media that showed her posing with guns, touting Russian policies and schmoozing with notable politicians.
Butina’s romantic partner, Republican operative Paul Erickson, was also listed in court papers as helping her in the influence campaign. Erickson has not been charged in the investigation, but ABC notes that federal prosecutors have notified him that he is the subject of an ongoing investigation.
The Daily Beast reported earlier this month that Erickson was sent a “target letter” by investigators notifying him they were looking into violations of Section 951, a statute described as being reserved for espionage-like cases.
Butina has been held in federal custody for five months since her arrest after a judge denied her bail.
