They are all out. That article isn't really accurate. It's talking about the giants who all got their heads chopped off. Doesn't talk about the million little guys who died off over last 5 years.

CTAs trade primarily commodities. During 2008 they made high returns when stock investors lost > 20% This type of alternative investments are used for diversification. It is wrong, actually very wrong, to compare CTA returns to stocks. Most journalists know little about the markets.
