A little-appreciated aspect of modern politics is that the democrats are free to pander to every ethnic or activist group. They make naked racist appeals to blacks, hispanics, muslims plus all the LGBTQ assholes. Republicans however are barred from appealing to their biggest group of supporters, ie normal white people.
Ads like this actually help republicans because they highlight the fact that we are in an us-versus-them environment. The ad's attempted emotional trigger is so obvious and over the top as to be laughable, but legal residents will resent the message that legitimate concern about immigration is tantamount to running children down with a truck. That's exactly why the ad was withdrawn.
