who d have thought Robin Williams killed himself?

People generally compensate significantly for their own deficiencies. Jim Carrey said that his life as a child was so messed up that he had to be the funny guy to keep people in good spirits. Behind many a comedic genius is a tortured soul.

Point is that I was not surprised about Robin Williams. I am not sure I fully buy the reason (mental illness) but his wife was giving him a tough time around the same time he took his life. Eerily similar ideas as to the potential causes to this suicide. Edit: updated post with links.

Fortunately, I got divorced on a downswing so she took what she could get, but goddamn if she isn't trying to stay attached to me for life. Marriage should not be in the cards for anyone looking to make significant $$$ in my opinion. Not without extreme vetting, prenups that get re-signed every year with independent counsel (so you have at most one year where the prenup might not hold up).

I can't help but think of "Louis C. K 2017", his new special on Netflix. He does a brilliant bit on suicide and lots of other dark subjects we're not allowed to talk about. I have not laughed that hard in years.

Suicide is one of leading causes of death in the US, so it's not a laughing matter by any means. People in finance are especially at risk by virtue of being mostly white and having a high risk job. Nobody seem to be making fun of someone dying from cancer or in a car accident, but somehow a suicide is always a fucking joke to some asshole.

Guys like these need to spend extra $5-10K a month to feel good about life and be upbeat in mind. I am not talking about hookers and lavish parties but things like nice massage, acupuncture sessions, walk in the green on the farms and interact and feed animals and similar other little things that nourish the mind, body and soul.
Of course, acts like living beyond the means and piling up 10s of millions on mortgage should also be avoided.

The amount is much more 5-10k per month, that would be pocket change for people at this level.

Everyone suffers. I don't know the guy, but I know people who have committed suicide and although I may sound like a sociopath for saying this, my only thought was that they did everyone else a favour by taking themselves out of the gene pool.

The difficulty with this suicide is his family who depended on him. Unless his wife was a harpy, she is going to feel guilty for a long, long time. His kids are going to blame themselves. What could they have done differently? What signs did they miss?

I am, of course, assuming the family was good to him. They could be a bunch of assholes who were slave drivers. And what if they were? And he couldn't leave because he would lose everything?

Who knows.

All in all, suicide is a GOOD thing. When I am 80 years old (lol, no one in my family has made it that long) and I can't move, but I have my facilities, I would gladly off myself to save myself the pain of a long death, pooping every 3 minutes and whatever other disgusting things await me in old age. There is nothing after this, so enjoy what you have now and go out on your own terms in a blaze of glory.

I don't think suicide is a joke. A person goes through a lot of torment and despair before doing this.

I do think that there is a lack of good sources of support (and I don't count doctors as support they are probably the least qualified to help with good counsel).

They should be an association of wise friend counselors.

If there were, someone could have helped and have had a trustee
1. Sell everything - move family to a modest rental. Put the kids and wife on a budget.
2. Send the guy to an exercise outdoors camp and with no money worries or pressure - his family needs are being met. Good food, hard exercise, outdoors and no financial pressures.

The media has conditioned us to think that if a trader is depressed, it's due to bad performance. Most of the suicides have nothing to do with financial pressures, finance professionals included. Depression can be trigged by anything - it could be family, it could be physical condition. It could be no reason at all.
