It's unconscionable. Chinese are weird that way; they just don't care about anything and anyone if there's money to be made and get rich. And their government's response is to put to death those they catch.
I grew up with my fair share of religious nonsense that turned me into a angry atheist before I found my anchor as a peaceful atheist. It's not until I lived in China some 20 years ago, that I came to appreciate the value of religion, or rather, its humanistic foundation. The ruthlessness, the rigid social hierarchy, the struggles of so many humans fighting for limited resources was overwhelming and far different from what I'd experienced living in the West. Even my experience with poverty in Africa didn't prepare me for China. These people have so much to prove to the world that they will compete in anything to affirm their superiority in whatever, be it military, technological, scientific, sports, etc no matter the consequences.
It's no surprise to me that Christianity is growing like wildfire among Chinese outside China. They're craving for something more meaningful than what their previous generations grew up with and still dominant in China proper.

We could rely on religion to reel in unchecked capitalism. Or rely on government as the West did 100 yrs ago. Not to downplay activism by religious types who aided in pushing government for regulation.
Do you know why historically and traditionally the French have 3 children? To cover the 3 centers of power: military (government), business and religion.
So? Do you think the Catholic church enjoys the same power it once did in post-Renaissance Europe?
I believe religion still wields a great deal of power, and in much the same overt and covert ways as it did in Renaissance Europe. Look at the way it is influencing our US elections, for example. Look at how religions influence the world..
The French recognized early the value of hedging their bets to climb the ladder of power with a child in the military, a child in the clergy and a child to run the business.
You're all over the place w/this. At first it sounded like you were pushing the idea that secularism led to some hellscape in China which is easily debunked by pointing to much of secular EU/Scandinavia or Israel. I've heard similar arguments from "totally not a theist I swear" Jordan Peterson.
