Vlad was playing nice, then in 2014 he was not playing nice. Ukraine was leaning to Europe not falling into his reported "get the USSR gang back together" ideas. Paul Manafort did his best to keep them loyal to mother Russia but he failed.

I should have added that Russia was never going to give up on Crimea, they would have preferred all of Ukraine however as a Croatian friend said to me when they invaded. Look at a map. They can't lose that sea access.

You can be sure Clinton and Obama knew all about this. Why not play nice until action is (was) taken.

They did you can be sure and it happened anyway, nobody was going to stop it and from what my Croatian friend (military) said nobody in the area was expecting any different. The West got larger Ukraine, losing Crimea was for sure as the milk was sour. Ukraine is a pretty big prize though.



They had to keep the bases in Crimea and both sides of the waterway to keep a safe channel.
