Ah, but that's not accounting for how hard it is to get into Harvard given you're an Indian from India. Gotta be way worse than if you're a random white kid from Topeka.
It is true even Asian kid from here to get into not only Harvard, but any top schools. Competition for any Asian kid here is other Asian kid, even though all of them are Americans.

That being said, It is much harder to get admission in to IIT's. There are about 3500 slots. Students study 2 years to take entrance exams. Admission rates for certain departments is sub 0.5% from qualified pool of students.

University of Delhi, which is a good university but no where near the quality of IIT recently had 100% cut off. So one had to be perfect to get into that university.

For people who can afford, it is easier come here for college than study there.
That is insane, both University of Delhi and the IITs. What percentage of the IIT applicants do you think are highly qualified, i.e. they would do well if they attended? And what do you think happens to the one's who are well qualified but don't get in, do they all end up with degrees or is that intellect mostly wasted, if you don't mind opining?
There is no elite without the peasants. I'm surprised you don't understand this.
The elites would be very happy with more people -- more dumb consumers to make them even wealthier.
Anyone with a brain will understand though why our population is way too high and if reduced, that is absolutely a good thing for everyone and everything.
To be honest, IIT students who have come through qualification exams are really "very smart" as entrance exams are very tough.
However, IIT and other Indian education process is impractical IMHO. This is proven by the fact that most of the innovation in the world come from the west. Even Japan and Korea lag far behind in innovation vrs the west.
Brutal cramming systems of Asia do not allow person to think out of the box. Further some countries industry budgets throw little for R&Ds. Instead they focus more on buying/copying already used tech proven successful elsewhere.

Not sure about Delhi university, but studying for IIT entrance exam is long process. Students starts their preparation 2 years earlier. Competition is insane. Those who don't get admitted will try their luck in next tier NIT (National institute of technology). They are also pretty good. There are about 31 NIT's.
I would say applicant pool is pretty well qualified, since it needs lot of time and dedication to prepare for the exam. Those who don't get in IIT or NIT will join some local university or pursue other degree program.
Just for reference, Google CEO is a IIT product where as Microsoft CEO went to Mangalore University which is a local university not part of IIT or NIT
