Going back further, they should have gotten Ruthie to retire when the dems controlled the Senate under Obama- early on. She was of advanced age already and had a wide range of health problems that were not going to improve but she got caught up in the cult status that was building around her and assumed that Hillary would win after Obama so she could play around longer.
Losing 'her seat" to a conservative was just a result of her own personal greed- putting her own puffed up rock star status ahead of the continuation of the principles she allegedly wanted to see furthered. She had a good run, it was time to step down. The dems may argue that they could not get her to step down so it is not their fault. Well, okay then, that just makes my point. Ruthie was just functioning as a selfish shit then.
What would have happened if Ruth retired in 2015 or 2016....GOP Senate would have blocked any nomination. She was still going strong then. She would have had to predict in the 2014 election 6 years ago that Dems would have lost the Senate and then the Presidency. Neither of which were on the table really.
If HRC wins then she can pick her time when the health issues go to be too much.
I dont think RBG felt she needed to leave in 2014 when she was still active and functioning.
