I've harshly criticized freshman democrat Senator Jim Webb of Virginia on other issues, but I have to give him props for being one of the few democrats with the backbone to buck their party leadership and vote against this bill. In his case, it is particularly significant because he doesn't run for reelection for 5 years, when a lot of voters will have forgotten about this vote.
I contrast him with Trent Lott, a guy conservatives stood behind when he was getting stripped of his Majority Leader's post in the hysteria over his remarks at Strom Thurmond's retirement party. Bush pulled the rug out from under Lott then and put the ineffective Bill Frist in as Leader. Now Lott not only betrays those who supported him, but he is grumbling about the need to "do something" about talk radio, congress-speak for reinstituting the so-called Fairness Doctrine.
