Dress code bans popular coats like $825 Canada Goose in 'poverty-proofing' effort
A school outside London has banned students from wearing designer coats in an attempt to prevent poverty shaming.
Woodchurch High School sent a letter to parents describing a new dress code that prohibits pupils from wearing high-end brand-name coats, specifically banning Canada Goose and Moncler.
“We are very concerned about the fact that our children put a lot of pressure on parents to buy them expensive coats,” principal Rebekah Phillips told the Independent. Additionally, she said, the students who can’t afford the fancy coats — the most popular Canada Goose style retails for $825 — “feel stigmatized, they feel left out, they feel inadequate.”
Phillips added, “We are very concerned as a school about poverty-proofing our school environment and, as such, we met with groups of pupils and made the decision in consultation with them.” A few years ago, a similar ban on expensive bags was introduced.

I was in a Major city last week and looked for a Toastmasters meeting. I found one and it turned out to be in a rough area in the inner city. The entire makeup of the meeting, other than myself, were Black people. Politics was very top of mind and two of three speeches given were about politics. Everyone in the meeting, other than myself, was decisively Left.
The Speeches given were by a lady who recently had a stroke, an activist, and an individual who had has plans to run for political office. Even though I not agree with some of the premises in one of the speeches, I considered them high in content and the speakers highly skilled. The participants were genuine people who both cared for their community and were actively looking to make things better.
I had the thought that one of the good things Obama accomplished during his Presidency was to help provide a sense of belonging and empowerment to many in the Black community. I am excited to think of the potential of a large group of long supressed, motivated, and competant group of people.
I plan to attend the next scheduled meeting and hopefully will have a speech prepared before then. I will create a thread for this speech and ask for feedback on it later this week.
