Yes, after Bangkok, go first to Phuket and get your fill there - beaches galore, scenery incredible, food choices = too many. Get your international driver license in advance and rent a car and tell 'em you want full first class insurance included and make sure you see it in writing. All of Thailand has American style signs on the roads and driving is a breeze - you will get used to driving on the other side in 5 minutes flat.
