America To "Lose" In A Trade War?

Of course, everyone is savvy enough here to see that what he is really saying is that it could be real bad for Canada. Therein lies his real worry.

Obviously. They can see their free ride coming to an end.

It's probably a good thing if it happens. They are no longer a reliable ally. They admit large numbers of potential terrorists. They even gave one guy who was at gitmo ten million dollars. I'm not saying Canada is our enemy, only that they can no longer be counted on as being basically the same as the US, only a different flag. This Trudeau boy makes Obama look like Winston Churchill. Sad but we need to beef up border security, etc. Just in case.

I propose
1. elimination of personal income tax for at least the bottom 99.5 percent.
2. income generation through a tariff on all imports (as the founders did it)
3. health insurance vouchers for basic plan for all... companies can charge more for silver, gold and custom
4. 2500 a month minimum income in exchange for half the govt workforce being eliminated through attrition
5. capped spending until the budget is balanced
6. no immigration until budget is balanced
7. at least a 10 year moratorium on the creation of money by the Federal reserve.

we work towards the best of the liberals and the best of conservatives and we put the politicians who give us the worst of both sides out of business.

Reality Intrusion Time:

The U.S. has always looked after the interests of wealthy corporate business owners and their lobbyists - and based its decisions on their self-interest. What makes you think it hasn't.
Well, THAT is precisely what I meant!!! We are a country of the Corporation, by the Corporation, and for the Corporation. "What's good for General Motors is good for the Country" :D

No, you are wrong on this. Every expert on this topic says NAFTA ending would be bad for Canada but worse for the US. I'm not personally worried at all I have no exposure to US trade concerns or policy. In fact, making posts like this suggests you are not savvy at all, you just believe all of the bs.

I did not mean to imply that the founders put tariffs on all imports. I meant to say they had tariffs instead of income tax.

nobody really knows... and it would certainly depend on how the tariffs are implemented.

a few economists might have a good feel for this and you might trust them but as a group the forecasts of economic experts are mostly politically biased garbage these days. The press find and economist who will say what they desire and they deem him or her an expert.

But it could work out for both side.
Bringing jobs back home into your own industries could result in stronger economies.

The whole idea of comparative economic advantage is powerful in theory. But it obviously does not apply a real world filled with all sorts of barriers to open trade.

Plus there are security reason to keep some industries domestic.

You remain a fountain of ignorance on this site. There is no "free ride" for Canada because of trade with the US. That's an ignorant concept that comes from an arrogance you have based on nothing real. We have never be the same as the US nor will we ever want to be. We don't admit large number of potential terrorists a witnessed by the fact the US has more terrorist incidents then Canada does.

Americans have as a group tend to be inward looking and arrogant and underestimate the world around them. This led to the complete collapse of your financial system and stock markets in 2008/2009, and the instability in your housing markets and employment opportunities around the same time. When you say stupid shit about the world, the world tends to not give a shit about you at all.

I thought it something to do with mortgages and lax standards as China had a need to place 1.5 trillion dollars garnered in part by pegging to the dollar and erecting their trade barriers in their home market.

wall street found a way for a place for their money in crazy second mortgages thereby making big profits in the short run.

then when the obvious happened the fed switched out China's trillions into govt backed securities.

Every trade reality the last 100 years suggests widespread trade protectionism doesn't work.
Canada believes in trade and brokered a big deal with Europe last year and signed the TPP yesterday. If the US refuses to trade fairly with Canada, some portion of the current US trade will be shifted to those other regions. This will of course cost money short term as any shift does, and some US/Canada trade will remain regardless of the rules and the geography of the situation for both countries.

In terms of usual norms, Canada's economy has performed well since 2008 compared to other economies on the planet without the huge shocks to the system that some had including the US. Our overall numbers took a hit when Oil plunged but that is a regional problem. Almost nobody works in Oil in Toronto. The province of Alberta has been slow to adapt after being the richest province years ago.

I'm no expert in trade but neither is Trump nor most on this site. I have lived long enough not to sweat all this stuff and deal with whatever hand I'm dealt.
