nobody said anything about raising taxes overall. the article was all about tax on corporations and the rich that are at historic lows.
Tinkering with the current tax code is a waste of time. We need to completely revamp our tax system and make it simple and understandable. Unfortunately, the politicians like a complex tax code because they use it to hand out favors to their pals (buying votes) or attempt social engineering (buying votes) that almost always fails.
Tax code simplification and paying down our debt have broad support in the polls. Obama appointed a commission to do just that. When the commission issued their report, Obama praised them for their excellent plan, then immediately acted like they never existed. I was hoping Obama would step up and back a plan for concurrent tax simplification and debt reduction. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen. Opportunity lost due to lack of leadership.

I agree that raising taxes would be a huge mistake. Obviously the three programs you list are the source of future budget problems, and obama has cynically propsed nothing to deal with them, other than ludicrous claims that obamacare will somehow cut medicare spending.
But we need to also keep in mind that obama has managed to run up more debt than all previous presidents combined without those programs being an issue. His serial bailouts, crazed nation-building in afghanistan and socialist initiatives have wrecked our budget well before those big programs start to generate red ink.
