It has something to do with the ATI graphic cards, and AMD is offering some sort of software solution that can be downloaded from their site.
 
Daily charts show a tweaser, weekly charts show a very stong hanging man candle (strongest since 2002), which both confirm the fundamentals that were mentioned in this thread. AMD got hit today due to the sharp drop in US equities... otherwise looks solid over the long term.

The AMD processor has nothing to do with Linux compatibility. It is to do with the ATI graphic card drivers, and even that is not technical, but a business decision. There isn't a piece of software in the universe that any AMD hardware can't run perfectly well or better than INTC in some cases.

This is a problem for most of the vendors because of the old linux model of incorporating everything into the kernel. Since linux is open source, it forces some vendors to fall under the GPL when they need to support kernel code, so vendors refused to "open source" publish their drivers.

The new linux kernel supports drivers that don't live in the kernel, and therefore vendors will be able to supply drivers for linux without giving away the code because it then won't fall under the GPL.

wouldn't intel continue to dominate. amd always had a smaller market share? to reproduce the costs of intel's r&d, and innovation would it be not worth it for chasing such smaller market share for the given amount of cost ?

INTEL's share of the CPU market is, on average, decreasing. AMD's is increasing. Which is the better long range investment in your opinion?

what are the numbers like?

i would say you have to also take factor of economies of scale, economic advantage, lowest cost producer.

so intel would make a better investment imo.
