AMD's server CPUs are called EPYC, and the HPC workstation CPUs are called Threadripper.
I always thought Threadripper was the best CPU name ever!

Performance & energy efficiency of the new AMD Zen 4 Ryzen 7000 series desktop CPUs:
The new Ryzen 9 7950X CPU in benchmark multi-core applications uses max 88 Watts and is faster than the older Ryzen 9 5950X that uses 142 Watts for the same task.
And when limiting its power usage to 65 Watts, it still is faster than the Intel Core i9-12900K with 241 (!) Watts![]()
I used to work in one of these companies. AMD got into the x86 business when IBM insisted on a 2nd source for IBM PC cpu. Intel invited AMD to be the 2nd source. Once x86 cpu became a defacto desktop cpu, it was impossible for Intel to jettison AMD from x86. Unlike IBM, compatible desktop makers do not require second source. Legal feud ensued. It was settled in the 486 products. AMD won "Intel unfair marketing" lawsuit subsequently. In the 2010's, AMD managed to dig a deep hole with its "earth mover equipment" micro architecture. AMD almost went belly up. Only in 2017 AMD managed to come up with the Ryzen series with emphasis on multi-core. Intel with commanding lead in market share continue to plough 4 core is enough. Intel got stuck with 14nm node for a long time. AMD with TSMC started with 7nm and now 5nm. BUT, the current AMD 7000 Zen4 series with 5nm is running hot! Hot is not a good thing. Will see Intel can offer in its next gen processor. AMD and NVDA are both leader in GPU. Intel's ARC gpu is still far behind. AMD vs Intel epic battle is still ongoing. Intel still has commanding lead in market share at 63%.
Intel's ARC gpu is still far behind.
The current dual GPU supply is not good for consumer especially crypto mining. Scalpers are not helping. Many are rooting for Intel GPU. But not ARC.Arc doesn't look at that bad for their first generation product. Their top of the line Arc770 looks competitive with a nVidia RTX 3060 which is a $370 card. Have to see if they can move up on the second generation.
