AMD should be bought on pull backs

I recall a few years ago telling myself I would be an idiot to not buy a decent sized AMD position to hold for years to come when it was trading under $2.

Silly me did buy some but bailed out at way to soon, what else is new?

we all made mistakes.

I used to consider buying when price was extremely extremely high.
In fact, I used the stupid foolish screener to sieve out stocks that were at

1 YEAR HIGH,
5 YEARS HIGH ...

of course after buying (even after pull back), price would collapse like hell.
and then I had to top up my trading account again (and again ...)

most likely OP is using similar stock screener.

Interestingly this particular stock screener has been around for decades.

there are 2 ways to look at this chart;

1. when price is so high, it will go even higher

2. when price is so high, it is too risky to buy now

the first case is where most people would think.

I wish I still owned this. I was a hardcore fanboy back in 1999. hence the name. Wish I had never sold that stock. What a fuckin roller coaster. Jerry Sanders used to be the CEO. That guy was a trip. Great stories about a great CEO :). I can't remember the exact quote but it was along the lines of: "The salesman complain about pay. If the Engineers weren't there, they would have nothing."

This is why I was never a fan of AMD...

But of course, as we know, technologies change, and so people follow the money. 20 years is a long time to be pissy about a company. Like being down on AMZN since 1999. How'd that work out for the naysayers?

Most of the time, the price of a stock has nothing to do with profits or earnings, remember the internet stocks in the 90's for example.

And forget about P/E, this lousy "fundamental" indicator/metric is virtually worthless as far as timing is concerned.

as long as you get out on time sure, no debate there but they very often deflate like a balloon pretty quick and never recover. Microsoft took near ten years from memory to recover

I don't mean just a few indicators to value a company but long term it's vital to look at company financials.

you not a fan of AMD?

must put the FAN on the chip.
then the chip will be cooled

AMD have barely turned a profit in 10 years
Intek make 10% a year profit , AMD make 0.5% pa
may turn it around, who knows. Even if AMD have a big growth, doesn't justify the price in my view. P/E ratio 20 times that with AMD,
My money is on Intel, safer

Irrelevant as you're looking at the past and the market has changed a lot in just a year.
I'm shopping for a new system and Intel is in a bad spot. Only way it can compete is with price cuts. But even if they make the cuts, they cannot manage to ship their best products -- nothing available to buy. AMD readily available and outperforming Intel chips.
Intel 7nm fab is delayed a lot. Delays after delays. If it keeps going, they can run into serious problems. Not to mention Apple dropped Intel from their desktops. A few smaller ones have gone with ARM.

I believe our friend DerekTrader is talking about the AMD processor itself ("Everyone is migrating to AMD") , since AMD CPUs can match the performance of Intel processors at about half the cost.

Half the cost? Maybe at the highest end with Threadrippers? Elsewhere AMD is ahead by nowhere near half the price, more like a 10-20% advantage.
