Running the 64-Bit Version right now is pretty much pain in the ass as the 64-Bit drivers from other hardware manufacturers are still lacking. Like ATI still didn't officially release their 64-Bit Beta drivers.

from what i've heard, WINXIP 64bit beta is very buggy. my roommate runs 32bit XP on his AMD 64 3000+

i think you should get an Intel w/hyperthreading instead of AMD 64, because real 64 bit operations is not going to be a reality till Longhorn comes out. plus, non of the trading software are 64bits.

AMD 64 is useless for trading, if i would spend the money to get one, it is going to run w/gentoo linux 2.6kernel compiled with 64bit processor. on the other side, i dont know of any vendor is selling trading software for linux
 
actually the OS is pretty stable, it's the drivers that cause issues.

I don't know how you come up with the statement but the AMD is about the same price as the Intel though having better performance plus the ability to run 64Bit applications on windows in the future or as mentioned on linux systems.
 
Mine is a win XP Home edition running on AMD Athlon 64 processor 3000 + Whatever that means). I really did'nt pay up for it which is why I thought it was god value. Nice 15.5 in sceen, good keyboard ,wireless LAN , I got it at Circuit CIty for $1300.

I agree that it most likely is a driver isssue.

you're running on 32bit OS, and the processor is more or less a waste of money at this point. because you are not utilizing the 64bit registers the processor has to offer & all the hardware sandboxing that it has.

which is funny, reminds me of the 386 days, when there's a 32bit processor, but everyone is still using win 3.1, damn, that was over 10 years ago, and i was 10 years old. haha

what i really meant was the fact that you caugh up money for something that you are not going to use for a while. i think the cpu industry has hit a moorse law top, and its beginning to form a base. they can no longer sustain the doubling of cpu performance every 1.5 year.

i am going to give amd the credit of creating such an magnificient piece of hardware. i have been a very faithful amd user since K7 233 came around, priced over $600+

heres the real problem: first, amd optron (the high end 64) has been out for a year, last week. the only noticable 64bit suppport came from the open source community(linux 2.6kernel), and windows XP 64 is still in beta stages.

2ndly, when would you expect trading software/platforms are going to be compiled utilizing the 64bit architecture? assuming that there is a 64bit compiler support ontop of a reliable 64bit operating system.

we are years away my friend... when longhorn comes, its time to upgrade.

my setup is an amd 2000+ 1024megs PC133( yes PC133) bought that at sept 2002. around $150 w/CPU & MB, it wasn't the cream of the corp as the price suggests. but the AMD 32bit line is barely pushing the 3000 mark, almost 2 years later.

What do you mean??

I've got an AMD64 laptop which is much much cheaper than an Intel HT. It never crashes, never hangs, very stable, AND very cheap. It's awesome! Even when using Windows 32-bit OS on it, it still rocks! Can't wait until they come out with the 64-bit OS.
 
LILBOY716 I think your missing that point, that even with 32 bit applications the Athlon 64 performs better in most benchamrks and is cheaper than the comparible petium 4. So its not a waste of money
