The counter argument would be that for a president to fire an FBI director who was investigating him or his campaign would be tantamount to obstruction of justice and grounds for impeachment.
So Trump is in an awkward spot. It's similar to the spot these ridiculous immigration lawsuits have put him. Pretend that the process is legitimate and run the risk of handing over control of immigration to the judiciary. Or, assert Executive Branch authority and then be labeled a fascist cowboy dictator.
