Yes, Mike. A majority of the hedge funds and institutions (mutual funds, banks, pension funds) more specifically the latter at worst will create market neutral positions to stop the bleeding and take huge profits when the tides have turned.
While making markets for a brief time I was taught "you'll always have a buyer and a seller in your pocket if you make the right contacts and get the calls."
What do I mean by that? Imagine yourself as an institutional broker for Goldman Schlocks, GSHO. Let's take one of the biggest union-pension funds in the country (your client), The Separated Federation of Teachers (SFT). You get a call from one of the buy side traders within GSHO and he tells you that the desk has been pushed with 250,000 CYSCOL SYSTEMS order to sell at a VWAP of $21.50 and the stock is trading at $22.35.
Your client the pension fund is long, so you discreetly use the information to put on a 2,000 call credit hedge for their position which may be 200,000 shares. You take in the premium for the fund, tell the trader you're in, and you buy back the calls when the selling pressure leads up (as indicated by your in-house trader).
A chinese wall is supposed to exist between departments within a firm, but it doesen't exist in some of Wall Street's watering holes, where I have seen information like this shared and brokered.
To return the favor you may be obligated to convince your pension fund to buy up a losing position that your buddy at the buy side desk has been holding.
This is just one example of the way Wall Street has worked for a long time. Traders will protect each other, and they will all protect the big institutions, who have served as "wallpaper" depots, and generate big tickets for the broker-dealer. The realized loss of that trader to the individual retiree is ammortized over the remainder of the teacher's tenure and distributed over the number of teachers.
The system is designed and protected to protect the sizeable players who put the volume on the tape. The players pad the politicians who preside over the bureaucracies that were conceived to protect the individual investor.
I just trade to try and catch a few of the crumbs from the big pie that moves back and forth.
