What I don't get is, how does Reich explain that Trump basically doesn't pay any income tax now anyway? GE doesn't pay any income tax? Who the hell is paying all these taxes? It sure isn't the wealthy since they loophole them away.

Why Either Trump’s and Cruz’s Tax Plans Would Be the Largest Redistributions to the Rich in American History

I have commented a number of times on how regressive and unfair a flat tax is versus a progressive tax structure. The Trump proposal is not a flat tax per se, but it would be a huge step in that direction. The Cruz proposal is for a flat tax. Both proposals are, in my opinion, terrible ideas. What we really need is more brackets, not fewer. The top Bracket should be somewhere between 40 and 50%. We also need to tax all income, whether earned or unearned at the same rates. And we need to remove the social security contribution cap.

My opinion is that:
  • We should go to a 5% corporate tax rate.
  • Make the CPI transparent.
  • For citizens, we should go to a UBI. At todays' dollars (CPI), it should be $2000 per person and $3000/pp with kids.
  • Remove welfare.
  • Remove Social Security.
  • Have hardened immigration laws.
This has the effect of:
  • Corporations are happy. No more endless tax codes.
  • No more big government just to service the poor.
  • Every citizen can live and retire with dignity.
  • It encourages people that get an education here to become citizens and stay here.
  • It encourages people to have kids. The population in first world countries are imploding. GDP goes as population goes.
  • Welfare and SS are no longer needed as the UBI is forever. The savings from going to one program from two will have huge savings.
  • It will probably make corporations more disciplined and forced to innovate and spend on R&D, since the stock price will no longer be fueled by ridiculous 401K dumb money.
Everything hinges on a UBI. This can only pass if agreed to by both parties. But there is enough red meat here for all lions to feed on. And, it is logical.

BTW, Defense Spending should go from 50% of all taxable income to maybe 15%. That is a monster savings on the country. Instead of spending 600 BILLION dollars per year on defense, we spend say 100 billion dollars.

And, people are encouraged to be at peace with each other.

You need you real defence spending numbers. Add every department part that is spent for defence.
Example :
* Education-related defence spending
* University-related defence spending ( this should show up in a section of Education budget, like research projects that are directly militarily related)
* Medical-related defence spending ( biological warface and these type of stuff) ( this should show up in health related government budget)
* Business subsidies-related defence spendings : could show up in Technology, Entrepreneurship, Business'support business funding. Companies like Blackwater ( now called ???) do receive "contracts" related education, business and so on that do not show up in defence spending. This is the militaro-industrial complex.

It is good that you, the unsuspecting American people, get the reality of how and to whom your tax payer's money is distributed. You are giving the example to other countries.

Do you have a link that shows that breakdown?

No mink for it.
he way you can do it, is this :
* start with the US Federal Budget ( like here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_United_States_federal_budgett ).
You have mandatory spending, and discretionary spending.
For each you have the departments.
Go through each department spendings ( look the way it is divided), then ask the question , should this be in military or not? then has it already been counted in military? if not add to militaruy, and you have you new non-military(whatever department) budget.

You also need to look to the divisions in tax collection ( businesses who pay little taxes, get subsideies, tax reliefs, etc) . As well as individuals ( veterans in military or civil)?
I hope you have friends that are interested to find out these.

The military spending and subsidies are very hidden for the US.
What you can do, is trace the companies that the money goes to and more often than not hand into the hands of republicans more often than democrats. For unknown reasons democrats are more into "hippies" and "peace and love" type of business .

You will also need to check the evolution of these budgets directed via tax or payments or subsidies to the military : they normally will not change, but in total increase. Very hard for presidents to change that ( very strong military-industry special interests).

If you have the opportunity, you can plot the number of US soldiers and military camps and "security companies" (aka blackwater & al) / country versus the size of US oil companies in these countries. Those who assure the security of these private companies are paid by your real military budget. These US oil companies pay little for their own security. You the tax payers do, but the dividends goes to private hands.
The American "Peasants" as achille28 say do not get anything, and the American "Peasants" are asked not to check figures, facts.
