Lately there is a lot of talk about Algorithmic Trading. It sounds to me like a heavy duty buzzword for mechanical trading or automated trading.

or is there something I'm missing?

What is Algorithmic Trading?

Initially, it started off with with Order Routing algorithms to reduce market impact on large orders and liquidity risks. This is the correct definition, in an original sense.

These days... if you customize your software by anyway for trading, people call it algorithmic trading... Sounds fancy doesn't it???
