Conspiracy theorist and Info Wars host Alex Jones has yet to pay the families of Sandy Hook victims a single penny of the massive damages he owes them for his defamatory lies. So they're backing two ways for him to settle: pay $8.5 million a year over the next 10 years or liquidate his assets.
“The time has come for Jones to choose whether he is willing to pay his creditors a reasonable portion of what they are owed or would prefer to remain embroiled in costly and time-consuming litigation for years to come,” the group said in a statement, Bloomberg reported.
“Whatever alternative Jones chooses, the Creditors’ Plan provides a clear path out of the quagmire of these cases," the statement added.
Jones, a prominent backer of former Presidernt Donald Trump, was found liable for more than $1.1 billion in damages after he repeatedly claimed on his podcast that children killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newton, Connecticut and their anguished, sobbing parents were "crisis actors" in some wild conspiracy fantasy of his.
Twenty first-graders and six others were killed in the attack. Jones has since admitted the killings actually occurred.
As he was entangled in court cases over his fabrications, he boasted on his own podcast last year that he was declaring bankruptcy to shirk damages.
In court papers on Wednesday, the Sandy Hook families and an official committee of Jones' creditors argued that the Jones case, which has been ongoing for 11 months, should be closed by February, according to Bloomberg.
The US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas presented two options for Jones, who has ignored paying damages, despite continuing to live a lavish lifestyle costing up to $90,000 a month.
The first option allows for an orderly liquidation of Jones' assets, while the second would establish a 10-year payment plan totaling some $8.5 million annually.
According to a Nov. 21 court filing reviewed by Bloomberg, Jones' attorneys have asked to schedule a status conference on Nov. 27 to further discuss the proposals.
Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez refused last month to discharge what Jones owed to the Sandy Hook families, ruling that he acted intentionally and maliciously.
Jones has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
